Why American Exceptionalism Matters When It Comes To the Internet

I’m not sure if it’s ever been said, but the Internet could not have come into existence without America.  I’m not just talking about DARPANet, and the investment of the American people (and the American government) over the course of many years in the development of the ‘net itself—but the very concept, a system where the open exchange of ideas and information can move at the speed of light (literally) is one that could only be born in an environment where such an open exchange of ideas is an essential element of the society.

The FCC’s Misguided Priorities and the Amtrak 188 Tragedy

By Andrew Langer

The great Achilles heel of our political system is our federal government’s lack of ability to prioritize public policy concerns, especially stemming from an inability or unwillingness to assess real risks and compare and contrast those risks within the framework of public policy decisionmaking. All too frequently, the solutions to real problems are hampered by the petty dictates of the bureaucracy, tied down with someone or some group’s puffed-up political agenda.

This problem was underscored with stark reality this past week with the tragic de-railing of Amtrak’s Train 188 in Philadelphia.

Letter from the Institute for Liberty to Hal Rogers, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee

On March 24, 2015, a group of seventeen organizations, brought together by the Institute for Liberty, sent a letter to Chairman Paul Ryan of the House Ways and Means Committee, offering support for HR 1104, a measure designed to reform enforcement of the so-called "Gift Tax".  It has become clear that as part and parcel of the Administration's war on oppositional speech, the IRS is disproportionately enforcing the "Gift Tax" against donors to conservative and libertarian organizations.  HR 1104, introduced by Congressman Peter Roskam, would place greater controls on the IRS in this regrard, restoring these rules to their original purpose.
